Passive design for comfortNestled beneath the understorey of mature rainforest trees, alongside natural creeks and tall tree ferns, Raintree Terrace quietly awaits its seasonal visitors. The family has owned this unique property for generations, returning each summer to escape into the rainforest. When the existing holiday home had seen better days, the brief was to create a new home away from home—one that would embrace this extraordinary setting.
Each room frames a view of the landscape, bringing its occupants up close and personal with nature. Capturing breezes and allowing natural light to filter into the home were central to the design. Split over three storeys, the second level hovers above the first floor, sheltering both internal and external living spaces.
Operable glass walls allow this level to be opened or compartmentalised, giving visitors the flexibility to enjoy Queensland’s weather. Black steel cladding contrasts with white feature brick, while dressed timber joinery softens the interiors. The home remains understated, sympathetic to the distinctive natural qualities of its surroundings.
The 350 m² site sits beside Noosa National Park, just a short stroll from the legendary point breaks.
Raintree Terrace was awarded Residential Design of the Year at the 2022 Building Designers Queensland State Awards.
The home was shaped through a collaborative, interactive process between the homeowners, landscape designer, builder and specialist trade contractors.
