On Kawana Island, Tarawa overlooks the canals and takes advantage of the adjoining nature strip to capture a northerly aspect. Inside, it is easy to forget the surrounding suburb. A majestic stone fireplace anchors the living space, while the outlook draws the eye across the water.

The irregular, cone-shaped block narrows to a point at the street, complicating both planning and construction access. It was essential to give the main rooms the benefit of northern light and canal views to the east and across the channel.

Waterfront living also brings questions of privacy and exposure. A central courtyard offers shelter from strong southerly breezes and neighbouring views—a retreat within a retreat.

Carefully placed shading elements temper the Queensland sun. We found a fitting solution in Heka Hoods, whose minimal profile complements the home while providing shade and comfort.

The owner describes the home’s appeal best: “Thank you, Chris, for designing a house that I want to go on holidays in — I think if I were to pay for a holiday, I would be disappointed because nothing would be as good as this!”
