The studio / Since 2015
Inside Void.
Void Building Design is based on the Sunshine Coast and specialises in one-off homes, multi-residential projects, and significant renovations. Founded in 2015 and led by principal designer and owner Chris Halliday, the studio brings more than 25 years of design and construction experience to residential work across Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales.

The brief
Daily life gives the plan its starting point.
We ask about the ordinary routines that a home needs to accommodate: shared meals, quiet work, visiting family, storage and time outdoors. We also discuss what works in the current home, what needs to change and which priorities should guide the first drawings.
The brief records those priorities and gives us a reference for testing the design. It helps connect decisions about rooms, access, privacy and outdoor space to the life the home is being designed to support.
Site and climate
Light, shade and shelter shape the plan.
Site observations and survey information help establish the starting point. We consider orientation, neighbouring homes, outlook, levels and exposure, then test where rooms, openings and outdoor areas can work most effectively.
Passive design is the foundation of every Void project. Orientation, natural light, cross-ventilation, shade and thermal comfort shape the design from the first sketches. We work with the site and climate to make the most of cooling breezes, useful winter sun and daylight, while providing protection from heat, glare and weather.
Collaboration
Good collaboration strengthens every project.
One-off residential design brings together many areas of expertise. Void works closely with clients, builders, engineers, landscape designers, consultants and specialist trades as the project develops.
Bringing the right people into the conversation at the right time helps resolve issues earlier, makes information clearer and gives the original design intent a stronger path through pricing and construction.
Principal designer
Chris Halliday
Chris is the principal designer and owner of Void Building Design. His background combines extensive design experience with practical construction and material knowledge, giving the studio a strong understanding of how ideas translate from drawings into built work.
He remains closely involved in every Void project, from the early brief and design direction through to the detailed decisions that make a home buildable.
Recognition
Recognised work.
Our residential projects have received design awards and featured in publications including The Local Project and ARCHISCENE.
